Town-Wide Athletic Opportunities (Grades 5–8)

The Town of Brookline offers students the opportunity to participate in two town-wide athletic programs: cross country in the fall and track and field in the spring. Practices and meets are free of charge.

Fall: Cross Country

The P.E. staff helps prepare students to run or jog one mile. The final meet is held at Larz Anderson Park.

Dates: Mid-September to mid-October

Expectations: Students are encouraged to attend as many practices as possible. To compete in the meet, students must attend at least two practices and be able to run or jog one mile.

Practices: Held before and after school in the weeks leading up to the meet. Practices focus on building cardiovascular endurance and strength.

Team Size: Schools may bring multiple participants. Selection is based on ability, effort, sportsmanship, and participation. A list of participants will be shared one week before the meet.

Permission Slips: Required for all participating students and must be returned to the P.E. staff.

Spring: Track and Field

The P.E. staff works with students to prepare for a district-wide track and field meet. Students compete by grade level and gender, with the exception of relay events.

Dates: Mid-April to mid-May

Expectations: Students are encouraged to attend as many practices as possible. Participation in the meet requires attendance at least two practices.

Practices: Held before and after school in the weeks leading up to the meet. Focus is on endurance, strength, and skill development.

Team Size: Students are placed into events based on performance, effort, and practice data. There are limited spots per event, so selection may be required. Most students participate in one event; some may compete in up to three (track, field, and relay).

Permission Slips: Required for all participating students and must be returned to the P.E. staff.
