Driscoll's First Day

This excerpt from The Brookline Chronicle captures the opening of Driscoll School on September 16, 1911

Driscoll School Opens

Monday morning the boys and girls, tanned and rugged after their long summer's vacation, returned to their desks and lessons for another year, and the teachers, bright and smiling after their much needed rest, settled down again to the winter's work. The schools were open and work commenced once more for both.

The new Michael Driscoll primary school on Westbourne Terrace was opened Monday morning for the first time. This school is one of the best-equipped lower grade schools in Massachusetts. The six rooms opened for pupils will accommodate 350 students, and it is likely that several Boston school children will take advantage of the nearness of the new building to their homes.

The building is constructed of brick with a steel framework and is considered fireproof. Many new features contribute to the safety and comfort of the pupils. In the basement are boilers, a furnace for burning waste paper, and a well-equipped stock room. Additional storage on the first floor allows the school to maintain supplies for the entire year.

The first floor is devoted to first grade and kindergarten. The kindergarten classrooms include special facilities such as designated restrooms, drying registers for wet clothing, and learning materials including a piano, games, and instructional toys designed to support early learning.

Also located on the first floor are additional classrooms, a teachers’ rest room, and the principal’s office.
